WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

At arrival on 20 June ice disappeared on the river and water table was decreasing, although still relatively high. On this date willow standsl were still flooded 1.5- 2 km from the main river channe, while on 9 July water remained only in the cut-off meanders and was 1-1.5 m above the low water level. By 20 June vegetation of plants has just started, and permafrost melted to the depth of 10-15 cm, but arrival of birds, pair formation and occupation of territories have all terminated. Water table was only 1.5 m below maximum determined from the marks on coastal vegetation on 22 June on the Pancha River, 150 km along the Taz River from Krasnoselkup settlement. Water table decreased at 1.5 m by 6 July when we were leaving to Krasnoselkup.

Season temperature: warm
Season humidity: dry
Date of 50% snow-cover: 20-25.05
Date of ice-break on rivers: 2.06
Date of final loss of snow: 5-9.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes were not seen. Bean Geese were rare, and probably bred. No records of skuas or owls were made, except for the single record of two Long-tailed Skuas on 30 June in the flat-hillock mire. Rough-legged Buzzards were not observed, while White-tailed Sea Eagles were regularly seen and definitely bred, although nests were not found. Willow Grouse was seen once.
We have seen two lizards Lacerta vivipara and two frogs Rana terrestris. Numbers of large mammals were reported to decrease substantially due to hunting and poaching pressure.

Rodent dynamics:

Signs of rodent activities were seen relatively often in the Pancha River floodplain, but only two voles were captured (Grey-sided and Tundra voles). Rodents were not seen on excursions.

Rodent species recorded:

LatinAbundance
Microtus oeconomusrare
Clethrionomys rufocannusrare

Summary of fauna studies:

Bird counts in different habitats were conducted in a framework of Inventory of animals of the Krasnoselkupsky district of Yamalo-Nenetsky Okrug by Reseach Center on Biodiversity Conservation of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.
